Ocupado originalmente pelos bosquímanos, este lugar foi, no início do século XIX, reserva de caça particular do Rei e guerreiro Mzilikazi, para, em 1928, se tornar numa região considerada tesouro nacional.
Hoje, com uma área de cerca de 14.650 quilómetros quadrados de savana, areias do Kalahari e densas florestas de teca e mopane, o Hwange é um Parque Nacional e reserva de vida selvagem onde vivem mais de 100 espécies de mamíferos e de 400 espécies de aves.
Um lugar mágico onde se encontra a maior população de elefantes do Zimbabué, e onde se podem ver intermináveis manadas de búfalos, bem como uma das maiores populações de cães-selvagens-africanos do continente – uma espécie altamente ameaçada.
Dia e noite, esta é uma reserva de vida que nunca dorme. E se, de dia, podem ser vistas as grandes estrelas – leões, leopardos, chitas, zebras, girafas, entre outros mais raros, como o rinoceronte negro, o antílope-ruano ou a palanca-negra – de noite, sobem ao palco outros atores, secundários, talvez, mas igualmente de gabarito: o gato serval africano, a civeta, a hiena-castanha.
É, verdadeiramente, um desassossego de fauna e flora que aqui encontram as condições ideais para viver e se multiplicar. E um local perfeito para sentir o pulso ao planeta (ainda) selvagem.
